Why should someone leave their present phone service and switch to a service previously unknown? Who guarantees the reliability of this product? Why would anyone get into the hassle of spreading their new number to everyone?

These questions come in the mind of every person who does not know what this technology, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is and what are its features and advantages.

First of all, when you think about switching from your regular phone to VoIP Phone service, you need not to worry about the change of number. VoIP service providers offer the facility of transferring your same old number with this new technology. The process to switch service yet keeping the same number may take several weeks (they may range from 3-8). On the other hand, for a wireless-to-wireless transfer only 3-4 hours (average) are needed to switch the number to other service. A bit of such nagging can eventually save lots of your expenses through cost-friendly service plans. A user does not have to spread notes among friends, family, relatives and business contacts regarding the new number, when he would retain his same old number.

Many efforts are being done to reduce the time span needed to transfer a number to new service. There is not a given time limit for the wireless-to-wireless porting process by FCC. Yet FCC encourages carriers to use two and a half hours in porting. This time duration was mutually agreed upon by the wireless industry. FCC must take serious initiatives by pressurizing traditional phone service providers and all other related in the process to switch numbers for improving their process speed.

There are things which are even beyond the control of service providers and landline companies. The biggest reason for such a long delay in porting number is that there are so many stages involved for this task to happen. For instance, the leased numbers from larger companies must get their respective approval first. Then this company request telephone service providing company to switch the desired number, these steps are followed several times before the number is actually switched.

The reliability of this service can be checked by taking a trial version (offered by many vendors, not everyone). It is human psyche to react to change, so it is normal reaction to this new technology that people question its reliability. The most tempting VoIP Service feature is its inexpensive calls all around the world. Additionally, the same users of this service can communicate free of cost among themselves. This offer is beneficial equally for individuals and businesses. Now you can make calls all over the world without actually fearing for heavy bills being charged. Mostly vendors charge a monthly flat rate. You can enjoy all the value added service offered by typical phone with better quality and reduced price. VoIP uses internet as their mode of carrying data during conversation, which makes it a very fast and efficient service.

There are number of benefits provided by Voice over internet protocol. There are services offered with VoIP, which are never provided by classic phone companies.

Thanks for giving us a detail in view of number porting feature. However, one thing i could not understand. Why number porting procedure takes that much time. I had to do its once and my new service providers took three weeks to port my number.

Actually, it is a standard process. It not the new service provider who is solely responsible for the number porting procedure. Your old service provider also need to be involved in this procedure. This is why it takes so much time.

Yes being a voip professional, I am aware of the proceedings. Number porting involves your previous service provider also. The point is that your old service provider is not bound to help you in this process. He has the right to simply refuse.

This is a bitter truth. Your old service provider can refuse to port the number out without explaining any reason and you will be able to do nothing against him. The best way to port out your number is to let your new provider follow the standard procedure. Just give him time and your number will be ported.
